Background
Kitchener Citizens for Liveable Development arose from individuals from various neighbourhoods in 2018. The Development Committee, as it was called, was a discussion group and did not have any formal mandate to write council, talk with City staff or to propose changes. That was up to each neighbourhood group. Monthly meetings were held to help neighbourhood associations to understand the proposed developments, to find out how the City could grow in ways that were conducive to the residents and to offer alternatives.
Individuals among us have been able to suggest alternatives over the past few years – proposed towers were replaced by stacked townhouses and one tower in a historic heritage district is now before the Ontario Land Tribunal for a decision.
We have also been involved in City proposals with regard to parkland needs, affordability and renoviction, and the need to address climate change. Our priorities can be divided into four overlapping areas:
Affordability
Green space and parks
Building with climate change in mind
Community engagement in the process
We are looking forward to having a broad coalition of people who want to see Kitchener grow in ways that meet the needs of residents and newcomers in ways that are good for living and good for the environment.
