Background
Kitchener Citizens for Liveable Development arose from individuals from various neighbourhoods in 2018. The Development Committee, as it was called, was a discussion group and did not have any formal mandate to write council, talk with City staff or to propose changes. That was up to each neighbourhood group. Monthly meetings were held to help neighbourhood associations to understand the proposed developments, to find out how the City could grow in ways that were conducive to the residents and to offer alternatives.
Our History
Kitchener Citizens for Liveable Development arose from individuals from various neighbourhoods in 2018. The Development Committee, as it was called, was a discussion group and did not have any formal mandate to write council, talk with City staff or to propose changes.
Monthly meetings were held to help neighbourhood associations to understand the proposed developments, to find out how the City could grow in ways that were conducive to the residents and to offer alternatives.
Out of those meetings we decided to form KCLD. Our terms of reference are available here.
Actions
We have been successful in several cases to envision community-friendly alternatives. We believe that engaging the planning process with developers and planners at an early stage can achieve results that are favoured by current and future residents.
We have discussed proposals for parkland needs, for affordability and for development that ensures we build for energy-efficiency and which withstands the effects of extreme weather.
Some of our ideas are available on our website, including delegations to the Heritage Kitchener Advisory Committee and to City Council. We welcome your participation in our efforts to make Kitchener more liveable for residents.
Our priorities can be divided into four overlapping areas:
· Green space
· Tree canopy
· Building for climate change
· Affordability
We are building a broad coalition of people who want to see Kitchener grow in ways that meet the needs of residents now and in the future in ways that are good for living and good for the environment.
If you are interested, work with us! Email infokcld@gmail.com if you would like to attend one of our monthly meetings and help with our efforts to build a better Kitchener.

Individuals among us have been able to suggest alternatives over the past few years – proposed towers were replaced by stacked townhouses and one tower in a historic heritage district is now before the Ontario Land Tribunal for a decision.
We have also been involved in City proposals with regard to parkland needs, affordability and renoviction, and the need to address climate change. Our priorities can be divided into four overlapping areas:
Affordability
Green space and parks
Building with climate change in mind
Community engagement in the process
We are looking forward to having a broad coalition of people who want to see Kitchener grow in ways that meet the needs of residents and newcomers in ways that are good for living and good for the environment.
